Winter Storm - End of Day Update

The snowfall in New York City is tapering off, although high winds causing snowdrifts can make it appear that snow is still falling.  Snow removal crews are working hard to clear pathways across campus.  Thank you to all University staff whose dedication and hard work have enabled business at the university to continue through the storm.

Barring any unforeseen developments, there will be normal operations at the Morningside campus tomorrow.  There are some impacts for the remainder of today and into tomorrow to keep in mind:

  • Libraries – Butler Library will remain open as a study space only until 9 p.m. this evening.  All Butler library services, including stack access, have closed at 5 p.m.  All other libraries at Morningside have closed at 5 p.m. today.
  • Campus Grounds – Crews are continuing to clear pathways and sidewalks on campus as they contend with dropping temperatures and snowdrifts.  At the Morningside campus, the Earl Hall gate, 120th Street gate, Chapel gate, and exterior staircase at the Northwest Corner Building may remain closed into tomorrow to facilitate snow removal.  All other gates and regular building entrances should remain available to access campus tomorrow.
  • Transportation – The Intercampus and Fort Lee shuttle buses are operating with delays due to road conditions.  The Evening Shuttle will be operating this evening for as long as weather and road conditions permit.  The Lamont shuttle is expected to resume operation tomorrow in conjunction with normal operations at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Freezing temperatures are being forecasted for tomorrow, which could lead to challenging road conditions in light of today’s snowfall.  Keeping safety in mind, we encourage everyone to monitor and follow the guidance of local government agencies regarding road conditions during your commute tomorrow.  Please consider using mass transit for your travel as much as is possible.

Campus Operations continues to be available to assist with campus and building services. Please immediately report any unsafe conditions, such as icy areas, building floods, or falling snow from nearby buildings.  At Morningside, contact the Facilities Services Center at 212-854-2222, 24 hours a day. At the Medical Center, contact Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, or after-hours call Public Safety at 212-305-8100.

If more updates become available, we will update you via email and the Columbia Preparedness website, preparedness.columbia.edu.

Please stay safe and exercise caution when traveling.
