Winter Storm Watch/Sunday, Feb. 22 to Monday, Feb. 23
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for New York City and its surrounding areas beginning Sunday morning, February 22 through the afternoon of Monday, February 23. The forecast calls for a potential for snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches and wind gusts as high as 40 mph.
Expect very difficult travel conditions that could impact travel on Sunday and Monday. Use mass transit whenever possible and exercise extreme caution due to snow and ice when traveling during the storm.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON CAMPUS
Normal University operations are expected. Transportation shuttle service and the On-Demand Evening Shuttle may have service impacts due to road conditions. Be sure to download the TripShot app for real-time bus locations and service-related announcements.
The Emergency Management Operations Team is closely monitoring the forecast and will send updates via email messages as well as on the Columbia Preparedness site and the Medical Center Campus Status Page should there be adjustments to available campus entrances and other changes to University operations.
PREPARE FOR THE SNOW AND FREEZING TEMPERATURES
Please help preserve buildings, valuables, and most importantly your own safety, by doing the following:
- Securely close all windows, window shades, blinds, or curtains. This single step may be the most important way that you can protect your space from potential damage.
- Leave all radiator valves and fan coils turned on to ensure adequate heating and to avoid freezing damage. Fan coils should be set to the slowest speed setting.
- Clear clothing or furniture away from heaters to avoid inadequate heating that may cause freeze-ups and damage.
- Make sure all faucets are off.
- Close fume hoods when not in use and shut down non-essential lab equipment.
- Be careful. Safety is our priority - use caution when navigating around campus during the icy winter months.
