Winter Storm Expected, Beginning Tonight Through Tomorrow Evening

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for New York City and its surrounding areas beginning tonight through tomorrow evening.  The storm system is predicted to bring heavy snow, freezing temperatures and high wind gusts, causing blowing and drifting snow.  Difficult travel conditions are anticipated during the morning commute tomorrow.  Total snow accumulations are predicted to be 3 to 6 inches, with higher amounts possible in some areas.  Record low temperatures are anticipated on Friday following the storm.

The Emergency Management Operations Team (EMOT) is monitoring the situation and will keep the Columbia community informed as forecasts for the Columbia area continue to develop.

Prepare for the Storm:

Please help preserve buildings, valuables, and most importantly your own safety, by doing the following:

  • Securely close all windows, window shades, blinds, or curtains. This single step may be the most important way that you can protect your space from potentially damaging high winds and heavy rain.
  • Turn off computers, lights and other equipment before leaving, and shut down non-essential lab equipment. Electrical or valuable items should be moved off the floor and away from windows.
  • Prepare for potential power outages, by charging cell phone batteries and gathering supplies. If you lose power and have disability or access needs, or use Life Sustaining Equipment (LSE) and need immediate assistance, please dial 911 immediately or Columbia Public Safety at 212-854-5555 (Morningside) or 212-305-7979 (CUMC).

For real-time weather information, visit the National Weather Service. Stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC, the City's official source for emergency information, or by visiting New York City’s Severe Weather website.

Campus Operations continues to be available to assist with campus and building services. Please immediately report any unsafe conditions, such as icy areas, building floods, or falling snow from nearby buildings.  At Morningside, contact the Facilities Services Center at 212-854-2222, 24 hours a day. At the Medical Center, contact Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, or after-hours call Public Safety at 212-305-8100.

Please stay safe and exercise caution when traveling.
