Predicted Winter Storm on Wednesday, March 7: Columbia University to be Open as Normal

Columbia University will be open as normal tomorrow, Wednesday, March 7.  Please note that travel conditions are expected to be difficult during the morning commute. Allow extra travel time to get where you need to go. We encourage you to use mass transit for your travel as much as is possible. Employees concerned about their commute should connect with their supervisor or department administrator.

The Winter Storm Warning for New York City and surrounding areas issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) remains active from 12:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 7 until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, March 8.  Snowfall is estimated to be 4-8 inches, and visibility may be significantly reduced at times.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              
As we become aware of new information that may increase the risk of maintaining normal operations, we will update you with that information as soon as possible via email and/or text, as well as through the Columbia Preparedness website
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          
Please be aware of the following gate closures and other possible changes to normal operations:

Morningside Campus:

  • The College Walk pedestrian gates (on both Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue), Earl Hall gate, 120th Street gate, Chapel gate, and exterior staircase at the Northwest Corner Building will be closed for snow removal.
  • All other gates and regular building entrances should remain available to access campus.  

University shuttle buses:

  • The Lamont Shuttle is cancelled for Wednesday, March 7, until further notice.
  • We anticipate all other shuttle buses will be operating with delays due to road conditions.  Please check the Transportation website tomorrow morning for impacts to the Intercampus, Manhattanville Loop, and Fort Lee shuttles.

University events and programs:

  • Please be aware that events and other programs scheduled for Wednesday may be canceled. If you are planning to attend an event tomorrow, please reach out to the event organizer for the latest updates.  

Campus Operations will be available to assist with campus and building services. Please immediately report any unsafe conditions, such as icy areas, building floods, or falling snow from nearby buildings.  At Morningside and Manhattanville, contact the Facilities Services Center at 212-854-2222, 24 hours a day. At the Medical Center, contact Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, or after-hours call Public Safety at 212-305-8100.
 
For any other emergencies, please contact Public Safety at 212-854-5555 (Morningside), 212-853-3333 (Manhattanville), 212-305-7979 (CUMC), or 911 if appropriate.   The EMOT team will be monitoring the storm as it unfolds and will keep you updated as new information becomes available that impacts you or our campus.  For real-time weather information, visit the National Weather Service.
