Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Update for Friday, September 29

In light of the heavy rain in the New York City metropolitan region today, Governor Hochul has declared a State of Emergency in New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island due to the significant rainfall and flooding in the area.

The National Weather Service has extended its Flash Flood Warning for the metropolitan area until 4:00 p.m. today, and a Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight. Four to six inches of rain has fallen, with an additional two to four inches of heavy rain possible and rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour. Flash flooding is already occurring. Rain and flooding are anticipated to subside in the late afternoon and evening.

Operations and classes are continuing as normal on campus. If weather conditions prevent you from attending in-person classes, please contact your professor. Campus shuttle service is operating with delays expected due to road conditions. The Via Evening Shuttle is anticipated to be in operation, with the possibility of service impact. Please monitor the Columbia Transportation websitefor any changes to service.

Mass transportation services are experiencing severe disruptions and some suspension of service due to heavy rain and flooding. Please check the service status of your transportation provider before beginning your travels. Please use extreme caution if you must travel and follow current guidelines from New York City.
