A drought warning has been declared for New York City and surrounding areas. City water reservoir levels have dropped to 60 percent compared to 80 percent around this time of year due to a lack of precipitation this fall. The city states that almost eight inches of rain are needed for the city’s water supply to reach normal levels. Residents are encouraged to reduce water usage to slow the depletion of reservoir levels and help delay or prevent declaration of a drought emergency.
What You Can Do
You can help conserve water by following these simple steps:
- Do not flush toilets unnecessarily
- Take shorter showers and fill bathtubs halfway
- Avoid running the faucet continuously while shaving, washing hands, or brushing teeth
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full, and use shorter cycles if available
- Turn off the water when washing dishes
