Winter Storm Warning (1/28 - 1/29)

January 28, 2022

The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded its Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for New York City and its surrounding areas, in effect beginning 7 p.m. on 1/28 through 7 p.m. on 1/29.

The current forecast calls for heavy snow in the city and surrounding areas, with accumulation of 6 to 9 inches, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions. Near blizzard conditions are possible for a period on Saturday. Use mass transit when at all possible, and exercise extreme caution when traveling during the storm.

Campus snow removal crews are mobilized and prepared to begin snow removal as soon as the snowfall begins with all campuses expected to remain accessible throughout the storm. Note the following changes to campus operations due to the storm’s forecast:

Transportation

  • Service on the Intercampus and Lamont Shuttles will be suspended on Saturday, January 29. Intercampus and other University shuttles for today (January 28) are operating as normal, with potential delays or service changes once the snowfall begins.
  • The Evening Via Shuttle will operate this evening for as long as conditions allow. Changes in service will be communicated through the app.

Campus Updates

  • Tents on the Morningside campus will close at approximately 8 p.m. tonight, reopening when conditions allow after the storm.
  • The Earl Hall, Chapel, and north and south pedestrian gates at College Walk will close at approximately 8 p.m. tonight.
  • Library services may be impacted. Please check the Libraries' website for status updates before coming to campus.
  • At CUIMC, the LL1 entrance of Hammer Health Sciences Center and the revolving doors located in front of Georgian Residence are temporarily closed and will remain closed until conditions allow following the storm.  The Hammer building’s main entrance and access ramp—located at W. 169th Street and Fort Washington Avenue—will be available, as will the Georgian Residence’s adjacent accessible doors.

Be sure to check the Columbia Transportation website for any additional changes or delays to University shuttles, and refer to the Columbia Preparedness website and the Medical Center Operations site should new information become available that impacts you or our campus. In addition, your school or department may communicate other school-specific operational changes.
