Hurricane Joaquin Update, 10/2/2015, 10:30 a.m.

Dear Columbia Community,

The Emergency Management Operations Team is closely monitoring Hurricane Joaquin, which may impact the New York City area this weekend. There currently remains uncertainty regarding the system’s track, intensity and impacts to our area. We urge all members of the Columbia community to stay informed about weather conditions and check preparedness.columbia.edu  or www.columbia.edu for campus updates as the situation develops.

The current forecast calls for periods of heavy rain and winds. Please help preserve buildings and valuables by doing the following:

·         Securely close all windows, window shades, blinds, or curtains. This single step may be the most important way that you can protect your space from potentially damaging high winds and heavy rain.

·         Turn off computers, lights and other equipment before leaving. Electrical or valuable items should be moved off the floor and away from windows.

·         Discuss contingency plans with your supervisor in case there are interruptions to transportation or other conditions that may impact your ability to keep to your normal work schedule

For real-time weather information, visit the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center.  Stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC, the City's official source for emergency information, or by visiting New York City’s Severe Weather Web site.

Facilities continues to be available at Morningside to assist with campus and building services. To contact the Facilities Services Center, call 212-854-2222, 24 hours a day.

Please stay safe and exercise caution when traveling.

Sincerely,

The Emergency Management Operations Team
